A star
Remember the day you told me
You'd hold my hand in the shadows.
The shade that still hides the gallows,
Where I'd kill me & watch him bleed.
Remember how I didn't believe you.
All the dust had not yet fallen
On days of battles
Settled on our doorsteps.
And we stared into the blue eyes
Of each other when we were young.
Perhaps our dreams settled in webs
Placed tightly in corners
We'd placed there.
Perhaps they were thrown out like
Refuse, while we marveled at a
Moon made of honey
In cold November air.
Or maybe we got lost in the laughter,
Sighs, tears, and drama
That crowded our rooms.
When we pretended
We couldn't care.
I still hear the star
You devoted to me.
The day rings aloud
When you told me
Of dead leaves.
I still recall the tiny faces like
Ethereal stop signs,
Looking a little like your's
And a little like mine.
All I wanted was to not be hidden.
All I needed was to not be silenced.
To not linger in the rafters.
To sing to the stars of truth.
I ignored all those road signs.
Reminding me of you.
I gripped those six strings
Like they held some version of youth.
I'd fade into the star,
And crowded rooms.
